In 1977 Charles Wu founded KMC with only a few pieces of used machinery. KMC was the world's smallest chain factory at the time but Charles believed that with continued dedication and a drive for perfection, they would become the world's largest chain supplier.
Over four decades, KMC has been focused on designing and developing chains for different types of bikes based on the needs and preferences of end users. Over time, KMC chains became stronger, safer, more advanced, competitive, and innovative. Always compatible, always ahead of the curve, always the choice of the best riders.
In 1989 KMC expanded to China, opening branches in Shenzhen, Shanghai and Tianjin. In 2001 we established a plant in Ho Chi Minh, Vietnam, opening the doors to Southeast Asia. To support global production and sales, we have 11 plants and 16 distribution entities across Taiwan, China, Netherlands, US, Indonesia and Vietnam.
Over the last four decades KMC has grown to provide products and service to users in over 150 countries, becoming an important link in the global bicycle industry.
KMC has made a tremendous effort providing customers service when they need it, where they need it. In addition to developing online channels, we've worked with our partners in connecting our front and back end systems in order to minimize waiting time, and to quickly understand and respond to our customers' needs. Our new shop-in-shop project "K-Shop" is a way for customers to learn more about KMC chains and the important role chains play. Our Dr. Chain program has over the years provided bike shops, clubs and schools education on bike chain maintenance.
Our solution to the e-mountain bike trend that is currently taking over the world involves working with industry leaders like Bocsh to develop the most advanced and durable drivetrain systems. We also design and produce chains for BMX, public bikes and other varieties of bicycles. KMC is dedicated to protecting the planet, surpassing the strictest EU and US standards. Our goal is to keep lowering our carbon footprint, impact on the environment and to develop better and greener methods of production.
Setting industry standards, KMC has won many awards since its inception. We were first to introduce lightweight chains, custom color chains, titanium coated chains, and DLC coated chains, which have won several iF and Red Dot design awards.
KMC chains are now the chain of choice of champion riders, helping them win two golds and two silvers at the Beijing Olympics, two golds and one silver at the London Olympics, and many more wins including at the Vuelta a Espana and KOM and Tour de France KOM.
For these reasons KMC has made the list of the "Best Consumer Brands" survey.
From here on out, we will continue to promote cycling culture, keep riding and share the joy of low carbon living.
KMC believes that connecting people is just as important as connecting links. In the past forty years, we've seen that with our bicycle chains, we can bring people closer together.
By promoting cycling events, we've created more opportunities for more people to experience the culture of cycling and to find a sustainable, healthy lifestyle through the joy of cycling. We care very much about our cyclists, and therefore what they care about as well.
Environmental sustainability is of the utmost importance to us, because without a beautiful, healthy planet, cycling really wouldn't be fun. The legacy we want to leave is one where people can continue to cycle and to love it even more.
